What Is the Healing Process Like After Dental Implant Surgery

August 25, 2023

If you're about to get dental implants in Alexandria, VA, you're probably excited to be able to smile and use your teeth confidently again. But, when will that happen exactly? How long will it take for the implant to heal?

Here's what you can expect.

How Long Will It Take for an Implant to Heal

When it comes to the healing period following a dental implant, it's important to understand that this process has two stages:

  • Stage 1 - healing after the implant surgery
  • Stage 2 - osseointegration

The surgery site takes between one week and 10 days to heal. The osseointegration process, on the other hand, can take as long as six months. That's because the implant needs time to integrate with the jawbone and become a part of it.

Once the osseointegration process is completed, the dentist will add the abutment and you will need a few more days to recover before you can get the crown and finish the implant restoration.

What to Expect After Dental Implants

Most people feel a bit uneasy when they hear the words "dental" and "surgery," but rest assured that Dr. Heejo Han will try to make you as comfortable as possible. He will numb the area so you won't feel any pain during the procedure.

Keep in mind that the effects of the anesthesia will still linger for a few hours after the surgery, so it's best to avoid eating so you don't accidentally bite your tongue or the inside of your cheeks.

  • The Day of the Surgery - You will feel sore and uncomfortable. Take the day off and rest. Use ice packs to reduce the swelling and OTC meds to alleviate pain.
  • 2-3 Days After The Surgery - Your discomfort will peak during this period so don't get alarmed. Pain, swelling, tenderness, and a bit of blood in your saliva are normal symptoms. Take it easy and don't engage in any strenuous activities.
  • 5-7 Days After the Surgery - Your symptoms should start subsiding. You may still experience some discomfort, but it should be minimal. If your pain persists or is getting worse, call Dr. Han immediately.
  • 10 Days after the Surgery - The surgery site should be fine by now and you can return to your regular routine.

Tips for Faster Healing

Here's how you can help your body heal faster:

  • Rest
  • Only eat soft foods
  • Don't chew on the implant surgery side
  • Keep your mouth clean, but don't brush directly on the surgery site
  • Don't touch the implant site with your tongue or finger
  • Don't smoke or drink alcohol
